Hi, my name is Kim Hunter. Four years ago I decided to learn to paint. I had already studied photography, and wanted to blend the two mediums. I also work in soft pastels, recreating my photographs, but trying out different styles. I have had several successful 'Kapiti Arts Trails', and have exhibited my work locally. I try to tend to the five other family members in between photographic jobs and painting, sometimes I manage! I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it. Regards, Kim

I feel like I live in a lighthouse, near the beach on the Kapiti Coast. Kapiti Island and her surrounding waters dominate my view but Mt Taranaki,Mt Ruapehu are also visable, and the Mountain Range of the Tararuas circle comfortably behind me. The south island is a clear ,pale blue in the distance, but i feel its connection and closeness. It is a 360 degree view. Nature stories and wonders are my inspiration. Seascape/marine imagery, emerge on the canvas in a mixed montage style.I paint with the crisp clarity I see.Clean clear colours of life, nature, and existence.

Uniquely privileged, Waikanae adjoins an estuary which is a wetland of national significance. Nga Manu Nature Reserve is another outstanding neighbour. Kapiti Island, just 5 km offshore, is one of our oldest, most important bird sanctuaries. This environment provides inspiration and motivation for my art. Initially I focussed on birds, those sensitive indicators of environmental welbeing. More recently, I’ve also become involved with illustrating the importance of biodiversity in pollination and forest regeneration. One picture is indeed worth a thousand words when it comes to sharing the wonder of our amazing natural heritage and the need to protect it.

Creating original and unique textile and mixed media artworks provides the opportunity to get the most from our Kapiti environment, both the land and seascapes. My pieces are inspired and influenced by nature and colour and allow me to use in ever new and different ways a wide range of materials in thought provoking ways. Art is a journey for both the artist and the viewer and hopefully both of us get long lasting enjoyment and pleasure from the experience.
